The Brutalist: Exploring Laszlo Sandor’s Canyon South III and the Rise of 1970s Desert Modernism

Discover one of Palm Springs’ best-kept secrets on this exclusive home tour through the Canyon South III Twin Palms, a striking condominium community designed by architect Laszlo Sandor in 1977. Begin your experience with a compelling 25-minute presentation by Michael Wollaeger—former Executive Editor of Architectural Digest and Editor-in-Chief of DesignLA—offering rare insights into Sandor’s career and architectural legacy.

Tour five distinctive residences within the Canyon South III complex (now known as Twin Palms), a 33-unit development set on the lush, seven-acre grounds of the former Sheffield Golf Course. The community’s expansive green space, dramatic mountain views, and low-density layout make it a standout among Palm Springs neighborhoods.

By the 1970s, Sandor had moved beyond the post-and-beam glass houses that defined the earlier era of desert Modernism, as seen in the work of William Cody, Donald Wexler, and E. Stewart Williams. Instead, he embraced solid forms with deep overhangs, thick stucco walls, and a sculptural, climate-responsive approach. Often referred to as Brutalist, Sandor’s style reflects a Modernist interpretation of indigenous Southwestern architecture—Twin Palms being a prime example of his work at its peak.

Born in Hungary, Sandor immigrated to the U.S. and worked alongside Alfred Beadle in Phoenix, contributing to the only Case Study House built outside California (1964). He later joined William Cody’s office in Palm Springs before launching his own firm. His portfolio includes private homes as well as iconic public and community buildings like the Seventh Day Adventist Church (1973), Plaza Racquet Club (1975), and several condominium complexes throughout the city.

Sandor’s bold 1970s architecture helped define the “second wave” of midcentury Desert Modernism, alongside contemporary projects by William Cody (Palm Springs Library, 1975) and Hugh Kaptur (Fire Station #4, 1971). Join us in celebrating this under-recognized visionary and experience firsthand the enduring beauty and innovation of his Twin Palms design.
