Join Modernism Week as we ascend the spectacular San Jacinto Mountains aboard the world's largest rotating tramcars, where breathtaking panoramic views unfold in every direction. Experience one of Southern California's most extraordinary achievements in midcentury Modern architecture and engineering. Opened in 1963, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is far more than a transportation system—it is a carefully choreographed architectural journey that carries visitors from the Sonoran Desert floor to the alpine forests of Mount San Jacinto State Park.

Prior to beginning the tour, you will learn about the significance that lies not only in its engineering achievement but also in the collaboration of two of Palm Springs' greatest Modernist architects. At the Mountain Station, watch a fascinating film chronicling the vision, design, and construction of this engineering marvel. Next you will have the opportunity to walk with one of our guides who can point out wildlife, name the unique plants and explain how the mountain ecosystem works. Alternatively, take a self-guided walk at your own pace to enjoy the peace and quiet while exploring whatever catches your eye.

The tramway is also a remarkable collaboration between two of Palm Springs' most influential Modernist architects. At the desert floor, Albert Frey designed the Valley Station, a masterpiece of Desert Modernism that reflects his philosophy of integrating architecture with the surrounding landscape. At the summit, E. Stewart Williams created the Mountain Station, a striking Modern building thoughtfully adapted to its rugged alpine setting. Together, these two iconic structures demonstrate how Modern architecture can respond beautifully to dramatically different environments.

The experience concludes with a delicious lunch at the acclaimed Peaks Restaurant, where spectacular views provide the perfect setting to reflect on this unforgettable architectural and natural adventure. Lunch includes your choice of an appetizer, an entrée (salmon, ravioli, grilled chicken wedge salad or grilled chicken sandwich) soda, coffee and iced tea.
