South Palm Canyond Drive in Palm Springs, CA with palm trees and Modernism Week banner

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Modernism Week, a unique array of private gardens and landscapes has been assembled.

The tour includes: A new home designed by local architect Lance O'Donnell is enveloped by a generous Modern landscape conceived by one of the homeowners. With strong geometric lines and embraced by the surrounding Gartrin hiking trail, this is a stunning property never previously seen by the public.

Tucked up against the mountains near the south end of Palm Canyon, there is a secret enclave of homes situated on a private lane. Between the homes and the mountains lies a wild natural wash. When the current homeowners first acquired the property their “backyard” was nothing but debris. After removing many dumpsters of dead foliage and discarded household items, they created a new desert park. They have established walking trails, filling the park with a stunning array of native plantings much appreciated by monarch butterflies and other wildlife. This is a magnificent example of desert landscaping in its most natural state.

The chic Twin Palms neighborhood is home to two horticulturists who have transformed their street-facing corner lot with a fantastic variety of succulents, some quite rare. Their private backyard contains a multitude of miniature moments such as a hummingbird garden, espaliered wall-clinging vines, and a lovely collection of planted midcentury and modern pottery.

At the north end of town in Vista Las Palmas is a garden developed around the theme of concentric circles inspired by a Wassily Kandinsky painting. This recently renovated and expanded midcentury home, situated on one of the neighborhood's circular cul-de-sacs, faces truly majestic views of the mountains.

Further north is a charming and surprising landscape that isn't afraid of color! From the stunning trio of totems by sculptor Dustin Gimbel, to the snappy furnishings and accouterments, this garden is a delight.

Along the route, Garden Tour participants have the opportunity to discover a variety of Palm Springs' most iconic neighborhoods.
