Max Strang, AIA, grew up in a Leedy-designed house in Winter Haven, early in his career he worked in Leedy's office, and now owns and maintains Leedy's home and studio in Winter Haven–which he has meticulously restored. Strang provides an in-depth exploration of Gene Leedy’s pivotal role in the Sarasota School of Architecture, highlighting his architectural journey from post-and-beam structures to Brutalism.

Gene Leedy, FAIA (1928–2018), a founding figure of this movement, settled in Winter Haven in 1954, marking the beginning of his impactful career in the area with the Sparrow House. This initial project paved the way for a remarkable legacy; Winter Haven is home to more buildings designed by Leedy than any other location worldwide.

Leedy's design philosophy catalyzed a Modern architectural phenomenon, yielding a distinctive body of work over 50 years. His innovative use of pre-stressed concrete and the introduction of Double T beams exemplify his forward-thinking approach and continue to influence contemporary architecture.

In addition to celebrating Leedy’s contributions, Strang will examine how his work inspires a new generation of architects and discuss ongoing efforts to honor his legacy. By showcasing his architectural achievements, we acknowledge Leedy's lasting impact on residential and commercial structures, bridging the past and the future of design. Join us as we explore the profound influence of Gene Leedy on Modern architecture and the enduring significance of the Sarasota School.
