South Palm Canyond Drive in Palm Springs, CA with palm trees and Modernism Week banner

Experience The Vibe, a riot of red, orange and pink velvet, bold pattern and Casino Chic, at an intimate PS ModCom cocktail party celebrating Palm Springs at its most playful.

The shocking pink front door of The Vibe offers the first clue that this is no ordinary Palm Springs house. Originally designed in 1965 by the architecture and design firm Robert Lewis & Associates, the house was transformed in the early 1970s by Jack Stephan, the colorful Los Angeles entrepreneur known as the “Plumber to the Stars.” His exuberant Palm Springs retreat became known as Stephan’s Folly, a bold expression of the era that has remarkably survived for more than half a century.

Inside, velvet is everywhere. Rich reds, oranges and pinks cover walls, furnishings and architectural details, joined by pink shag carpeting, paisleys, plaids, abstracts and stripes. Vivid wallcoverings, custom furnishings and a sweeping curved bar make clear that this was a house created for entertaining. Its distinctive “Casino Chic” style captures the maximalism of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when more really was more.

Now known as The Vibe, the house retains the glamour, humor and wonderfully over-the-top personality that made Stephan’s creation so memorable.

PS ModCom invites you to experience The Vibe as it was intended: filled with guests, cocktails, canapés and conversation. Join us for a twilight reception celebrating a remarkable survivor from an era when Palm Springs entertaining was anything but understated.
