Modernism Week Featured Home Tour: The Laswell House by Design Hutch

Built in 1947–48, the Laswell Residence has been thoughtfully renewed by Design Hutch, honoring its midcentury roots while blending contemporary details, eclectic style and Modern Desert living.

Built in 1947–1948 for Maynard A. Laswell and his wife, Stanis, the Laswell Residence is part of Rancho Royale, an early postwar Palm Springs residential enclave.

Samuel H. Levin, developer of the neighboring Biltmore Hotel, established the adjacent Rancho Royale residences, creating a collection of desert homes that reflected Palm Springs’ emerging postwar identity and a changing approach to life in the desert.

Design Hutch, an LA–based boutique interior design practice, has restored the home to its original spirit, drawing on the quiet optimism and clean lines of its postwar midcentury origins. A blend of contemporary details and a distinctly personal point of view bring its legacy into the present. Honoring the home's postwar midcentury layout, the space embodies a contemporary approach alongside the firm’s distinctive style and perspective.

While paying tribute to a classic midcentury style, they’ve seamlessly blended a world of contemporary and eclectic. From a wide array of neutral tones and textures, each element captivates a sense of discovery—while still allowing space for a connection to the Laswell’s past.

Nearly eight decades later, the residence has been carefully renewed by Design Hutch, preserving its original character while adapting the home for contemporary life.

Modernism Week Featured Home sponsors include Arizona Tile, Avanity, Brizo, California Closets, Dunn-Edwards Paints, INAX, Room & Board and Tesselle.
