Sagewood Neighborhood Home Tour: Donald Wexler’s Oasis for Living

Step inside Sagewood Condominiums, designed by Donald Wexler in 1972. Explore six homes in this iconic Midcentury Modern community of low-slung buildings, set among lush greenbelts and mountain views.

Recently designated a Palm Springs Historic District, Sagewood Condominiums is one of the most significant large-scale residential communities designed by renowned desert Modernist architect Donald Wexler. Opened in 1972, the 18-acre development reflects an important moment in midcentury architecture when thoughtfully designed housing for the emerging middle class helped shape Palm Springs.

Lauded for his quiet elegance, Wexler designed Sagewood as a serene desert oasis where architecture and landscape exist in harmony. The community includes 27 low-slung buildings containing 107 units. All are arranged across lushly landscaped greenbelts with meandering walkways, swimming pools and tennis courts. Architectural features include flat roofs, expansive patios that frame mountain views and dramatic overhangs protecting interiors from the desert sun.

During this special Modernism Week Neighborhood Home Tour, guests will have the opportunity to explore six homes of select two- and three-bedroom layouts while experiencing Wexler’s architectural vision. Original architectural plans and drawings will be displayed in select homes and guests are encouraged to stroll through the community’s beautifully landscaped grounds.

With its recent historic designation, Sagewood stands as a remarkable example of Palm Springs’ Midcentury Modern legacy and offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience one of Donald Wexler’s most celebrated residential communities.
