Cristina Kahlo, a professional photographer and member of the family, explores the importance of photography in shaping Frida Kahlo's biography, a family profession that has endured to the present day.

From childhood onward, photography played a vital role in shaping the visual record of Frida Kahlo’s life.

Photography became a defining presence in the Kahlo family when Guillermo Kahlo—Frida’s father and an accomplished professional photographer—settled in Mexico. Through Guillermo Kahlo’s portraits, the camera became an enduring witness to the family’s private and everyday life. In the decades that followed, numerous Mexican and international photographers portrayed Frida Kahlo and her husband, Diego Rivera, within the settings of their daily lives, creating a rich record of their distinctive public and private identities.

Family Legacy: Photography in the Kahlo Family opens a compelling window onto Frida Kahlo’s world through the photographs that shaped how her life and legacy are remembered. In this engaging presentation, Cristina Kahlo—a professional photographer and member of the Kahlo family—leads the audience through generations of image-making, revealing photography as both an intimate family practice and a vital record of cultural history. From the medium’s earliest place in the family to photography’s continuing influence today, this presentation offers a fresh and personal perspective on one of modern art’s most captivating figures.

Mexican photographer Cristina Kahlo has spent more than three decades working across fine-art and documentary photography. Using processes such as platinum printing, cyanotype, heliogravure, collage and image intervention, she explores themes including femininity, geometry, ritual, music, architecture, and more recently, nature. Her work is held in private and public collections, including the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, El Museo Latino, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Bartels Foundation Basel, Fundación Coppel and BNP Paribas Mexico.

An independent curator, Kahlo founded Galería Alternativa (1983-1985) and co-founded Galería Kahlo Coronel with Juan Coronel Rivera (1986-1991) in Mexico City. She has organized projects and exhibitions for institutions in Mexico, the United States, Germany, Austria and Italy, and has lectured on art and photography at museums and universities across the United States, Germany, Turkey and Mexico.
