Guerrero photographed some of the greatest artistic minds of the 20th century, yet his role in documenting midcentury architecture and design was overlooked for decades.

Mexican American photographer Pedro E. Guerrero (1917-2012) is best known for his iconic images of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and sculptors Louise Nevelson and Alexander Calder. While Guerrero’s work has graced groundbreaking monographs on this roster of artists, his story has often been overshadowed by both the high-profile subjects of his lens and by canonic giants of midcentury architectural photography such as Ezra Stoller and Julius Shulman.

The photographer’s impressive and wide-ranging oeuvre has garnered long-overdue scholarly attention in the last decade. In his lifetime, Guerrero himself played an active role in shaping the narratives surrounding his legacy. Through self-portraiture, the camera became a powerful tool for the Mexican American photographer to insert his own likeness and legacy into a primarily outward-looking portfolio. Additionally, by publishing his own writing and photographs in books such as Picturing Wright: An Album from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Photographer and Calder at Home: The Joyous Environment of Alexander Calder, Guerrero deftly shaped the narratives surrounding his career, ensuring that his own story would not be lost in the shadows of the famed creatives he depicted.

Bridget Bartal, MillerKnoll Special Projects Curator, Cranbrook Art Museum, explores this diverse body of work and the story of the awe-inspiring photographer who captured it.
