One of architect Stan Sackley’s major commissions in Canyon Country Club (now the Indian Canyons neighborhood) was for Earl and Marie Liever, close friends of his parents and occasional business partners.The Lievers, who had a large family, enjoyed entertaining but didn’t wish to host overnight guests. Sackley designed a large home of over 3,000 square feet with only one bedroom, but with grand living spaces and servant’s quarters. Sackley included details like custom patterned moldings on all interior doors and cabinetry, which he carried through to the home’s exterior on the garage doors, creating a design cohesion to the entire house. A low-slung entry loggia on the exterior provides compression, giving way to a dramatic expansion of volume as one enters the grand central living area with its 12-foot ceilings lined with clerestory windows. In the living room, Sackley’s signature mitered glass windows created an intimate connection to the pool and lush garden. The home is featured in Canyon Country Club: History and Design of Palm Springs' Garden of Eden and the author, PSPF board member Steve Treinen, will be on hand to sign books and meet tourgoers.
