Albert Frey's Bel Vista: Making Modern Architecture Accessible to Everyone

Eighty years ago, WWII ended and Albert Frey was presented with the opportunity to collaborate with two of Palm Springs' largest landowners and developers to construct his first-ever built tract of affordable, Modern single-family homes in Palm Springs—and one of the first in California. As his only built tract of homes, Bel Vista represents one of Frey's lifelong dreams brought to life.

While the homes suffered extensive alterations over the years, three of the fifteen modest homes in the Bel Vista tract are now restored to their original condition and are designated historic sites.

This tour presents an opportunity to see inside two of the recently restored Bel Vista homes. Both are now Class 1 Historic Resources and one is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can explore first-hand this often-overlooked aspect of Albert Frey's body of work—and better understand why it is more relevant today than ever before. Don't miss the chance to see how preservation plays a crucial role in the understanding of Frey's love of the little house.

To learn more about Frey's 1946 Bel Vista tract homes project and the recent restoration efforts, consider attending Todd Hays and William LaVoie's presentation on the topic during PSPF’s Free Lecture Series on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to educate and promote public awareness of the importance of preserving the historical resources and architecture of the city of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley area.” PSPF offers free membership as a public benefit.
