South Palm Canyond Drive in Palm Springs, CA with palm trees and Modernism Week banner

The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation will host a tour of the Lumber-Rease Residence, a seminal Krisel "butterfly" design recreated with his permission by builder Nate Otto in 2007.

Fifty years after Modernist architect William Krisel’s seminal design for a “butterfly” roof residence, the famous architect allowed the recreation of six more of his designs by builder Nate Otto. This particular butterfly example, outfitted with all the Modern amenities of today, is sited on a gorgeous Indian Canyons view lot that was once a tennis court. True to Krisel’s original design, high ceilings and clerestory windows not only make the relatively small three-bedroom, two-bath home feel much more generous in size, but allows for beautiful views of the mountains and golf course. Further bolstering the residence’s architectural pedigree, the 19,500 square-foot lot also includes a casita by up-and-coming local architect Sean Lockyear. The 450-square-foot detached casita not only compliments the lines and high ceilings of the main house, but hosts its own living space and an outdoor seating area with indoor-outdoor fireplace.

The home is featured in Canyon Country Club: History and Design of Palm Springs' Garden of Eden and the author, PSPF board member Steve Treinen, will be on hand to sign books, meet tourgoers and answer questions. (Copies of the book will be available for purchase.)

The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to educate and promote public awareness of the importance of preserving the historical resources and architecture of the city of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley area.” PSPF offers free membership as a public benefit.
