Villa Alejo: Creative Living, Art, Architecture and Midcentury Inspiration Home Tour

Villa Alejo returns to Modernism Week, showcasing its refreshed midcentury design, stunning brise soleil, restored pool, spa, and landscape upgrades. Tour select residences and meet resident creatives.

Designed in 1965 by architect Donald Engen, Villa Alejo is a striking 66-unit condominium complex featuring a dramatic concrete pipe brise soleil, a lush central courtyard with a martini glass-shaped pool and sweeping views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Originally built as a luxury residence rumored to be a playground to the Rat Pack and later converted to condominiums, it remains one of Palm Springs’ most iconic residential buildings.

Villa Alejo introduced several innovations to the desert at the time of its construction, including the area’s first full-size subterranean parking garage, ensuring cars stayed cool in the desert heat and residences fully accessible by elevator—a modern convenience that helped set a new standard for urban living in Palm Springs. Guests entering the building will pass through impressive cast bronze doors into a refined lobby featuring classic terrazzo floors.

Villa Alejo made its Modernism Week debut in 2023—an experience that brought homeowners together and sparked a renewed sense of community. Since then, residents have undertaken a significant restoration effort, including balcony reinforcement, lobby refurbishment, exterior repainting, upgraded railings, elevator restoration, pool and spa refurbishment and exterior landscape upgrades—all aimed at returning the property to its original glory

This 2027 tour offers a rare opportunity to experience the refreshed property while exploring a curated selection of residences. The building has also become an enclave for creatives. Guests will meet resident artists, authors and musicians who will share how Palm Springs’ Modernist architecture continues to inspire their work.
