California Modernism Was Born in San Diego: Gill’s Functionalism, May’s Ranch House and Kellogg’s Organic Exuberance

This lecture busts the myth that Modernism arrived in Southern California via émigrés R.M. Schindler and Richard Neutra. It makes the case for an outsized influence of a distinct regional Modernism.

Historians have long recognized the West Coast’s particular contribution to Modern architecture. While much of the writing about California Modernism has invariably concentrated on certain key locales–namely, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Palm Springs–little attention has been paid to the San Diego region.

This lecture aims to right that wrong and examines the distinct Modernism that emerged in San Diego at the beginning of the twentieth century. The story begins with the work of the pioneering Modernist Irving J. Gill, who inspired generations of architects, including Cliff May and Ken Kellogg, to design buildings fit for the Californian climate and lifestyle.

Author Dr. Mark Hargreaves shares insights gleaned from the research that led to his recent book The Distinct Modernism of San Diego (Modern San Diego, 2026). A book signing will follow the presentation. modernsandiego.com @modern_sandiego
