Bohlin Cywinski Jackson homes are renowned for their singular response to place. Principal Ray Calabro, FAIA and writer John Gendall will explore the work featured in BCJ's new monograph, A Long View.

Across alpine wilderness, high desert, and rocky coastline, the homes of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson have been widely celebrated for their singular response to place. Founded in 1965, the firm is renowned for iconic homes that have influenced a generation of residential design across North America.

Principal and Partner Ray Calabro, FAIA, will offer an in-depth look at BCJ’s residential design process through the lens of its recently published monograph, A Long View (ORO Editions, 2026). Calabro will be joined in conversation by the writer John Gendall to explore the evolution of BCJ’s work across a wider range of geographical regions and fresh material expressions, led by an emergent group of design voices within the practice who are carrying forward an ethos of humane Modernist design.

The homes included in A Long View–featuring work from the past 10 years–exist in diverse settings: from a rustic retreat in the wilderness of Ontario to the transformation of an existing Pittsburgh home into a container for light; a home embedded in a sagebrush-covered butte in Wyoming to a delicate wood-framed guest cabin on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest. Each resonates within its unique circumstances of client, place, and material.

A book signing follows the presentation. @bohlincywinskijackson @chapter_agency

California Modernism Was Born in San Diego: Gill’s Functionalism, May’s Ranch House and Kellogg’s Organic Exuberance

This lecture busts the myth that Modernism arrived in Southern California via émigrés R.M. Schindler and Richard Neutra. It makes the case for an outsized influence of a distinct regional Modernism.
