The ever-popular Mod with a Twist is back at a new location–the iconic Ocotillo Lodge in South Palm Springs. Mod with a Twist is a light-hearted (but deep) dive into some of the more obscure topics of the midcentury. This humorous and informative series of five 10-minute presentations offers rollicking, irreverent, witty, and surprising presentations about unexpected topics from the midcentury era. Attendees are guaranteed to chuckle and always learn something new. The series has been one of the most popular events during previous Modernism Week festivals. This reimagined version will take place in the historic 1957 William Krisel-designed Ocotillo Lodge, a former hotel converted to a unique condominium community.

Along with the presentations, guests will be able to view an exhibition about Krisel and his impact on midcentury Palm Springs. They may also explore the former Candlewood Room and Maverick Room which served as the iconic hotel’s restaurant and entertainment venues. Funds from this event will support the ongoing restoration and preservation of the Ocotillo Lodge.

The Confirmed Bachelor: Hidden Homosexuality in Midcentury America (presented by Bob Bogard) In post-war America two new types of bachelors emerged: The “single and ready to mingle” Playboy Bachelor and the Confirmed Bachelor, who seemed to have no interest in seducing women.

Mod Mop and Mow (presented by Anne Rowe) Midcentury ads promised a future of flying saucers in the driveway and self-cleaning kitchens. This presentation revisits that dreamy push-button future and asks: Did we get there or are we still waiting?
