Heart of the City: Pioneers to Playground of the Stars

Hear tales of illustrious forward-thinking women who created a premier resort destination out of the barren desert. On this path, a veritable museum of Architectural Styles, see our oldest adobe building (1884), our 1st Modernist hotel (1923), the nation's 1st multi-use shopping center in a Spanish Colonial Revival design (1936), and impressive midcentury Modern structures. The glamor of yesteryear continues today in our new upscale development called The Block. Outdoor art abounds with paintings, art installations, and sculptures, including the stunning 26 ft. tall "Forever Marilyn", still causing a stir as a beguiling symbol of our celebrity history.
