Sunrise Lanai: A Miracle in the Desert

Hidden off one of Palm Springs’s main thoroughfares lies the Sunrise Lanai compound, often described as “A Miracle in the Desert.” Built by the Alexander Construction Company between 1960 and 1961, Sunrise Lanai was designed by Charles E. Du Bois, A.I.A., an architect perhaps most famous locally for the “Swiss Miss” homes in Vista Las Palmas that blend Polynesian tiki style with dramatic two-story A-frame roofs reminiscent of Swiss chalets.

This event includes tours of 7 thoughtfully preserved and restored units at Sunrise Lanai. Guests are also invited to explore the beautifully landscaped grounds, which provide incredible views of towering palms and Mount San Jacinto. The shaded lanai, which inspired Sunrise Lanai’s name, is the main feature of the compound. It serves as an open-sided living area perfect for shade, sun protection, and socializing, embodying the fashionable trends of the 1950s and 1960s.

Sunrise Lanai is a gated community consisting of 22 units. Units range from 900 to more than 1300 square feet. There are six floorplans—four of which are showcased on the tour—all featuring spacious rooms, beamed ceilings, floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, and fabulous views of the pool and mountains. Most units have two bedrooms, two baths, and private “sun decks,” while some boast dens or additional bedrooms. Units originally sold for between $17,950 and $24,500.

Come discover the modernist oasis, Sunrise Lanai, where every day feels like a vacation! All tour proceeds will support the ongoing restoration and modernization of the Sunrise Lanai community.
