The concept of “utopia” and the “utopian” has captivated society for centuries, catalyzing any number of futuristic visions, plans, and desires. In the imagination, utopias conjure stark, idyllic images of an unrealized future, but in reality are mostly frustrated endeavors from the complexities of society and economy.

Our continual failure to reach utopia—a word which literally translates to “no place” in Greek—has only catalyzed the longing. Visions of utopia figure prominently in the history of architecture and urbanism, from the Neoclassical extravagance of Claude Ledoux to the agrarian ideal of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City to the conceptual parodies of Superstudio.

Seemingly placeless, endless, and undeveloped, desert environments have long served as the blank slate (tabula rasa) for the realization of utopian projects. The desert of Southern California, where so much capital and personality have collided, is certainly no exception.

In this enlightening and fully illustrated talk, the architectural historian Luke Leuschner considers the many varieties of the utopian which have been built or imagined in the Coachella Valley region. He will address more typical examples of utopias in the region, including a selection of bohemian colonies or Lloyd Wright’s Institute of Mentalphysics (1946), but also takes a utopian perspective on examples like country clubs, the seminal works of Desert Modernism, or even Modernism Week itself.

Ultimately, it is the goal of this presentation to weave a utopian thread through the architectural and urban history of the Coachella Valley and to expand and complicate the conventional notion of “utopia.”
