Interdisciplinary Mexican artist Aldo Álvarez Tostado explores the intersection of architect Luis Barragán's personal life and work with the aesthetic sensibilities of New Queer Cinema.

After extensively studying the work and writings of famed midcentury Mexican architect Luis Barragán, artist Aldo Álvarez Tostado began to view Barragán as a complex and contradictory figure, challenging the traditional academic and touristic portrayals of him as a monastic and heteronormative individual.

In his 2025 solo exhibition, titled "Pudor Espiritual" (Spiritual Modesty), held at Casa Cristo in Guadalajara, designed in 1929 by Barragán, Aldo explored the intersection of Barragán's personal life and work with the aesthetic sensibilities of New Queer Cinema.

The exhibition featured a range of new works, including sculptures, two-dimensional pieces, audio, video, and site-specific installations using various techniques like stained glass, nail polish on abalone shell, and carved drywall.

Through this exhibition, Aldo aimed to uncover the hidden aspects of Barragán's architecture and delve into the concept of privacy within his designs.

Aldo Álvarez Tostado is an interdisciplinary artist from Guadalajara, now living in Mexico City, who explores the concept of nation-fiction by dissecting the cultural and political elements that uphold the myth of Mexico as a country. His work focuses on themes such as borders, toponymy, the construction of a modern cultural canon, and the idea of "national masculinity" through homoerotic archetypes like the cowboy and football player.
