Discover a distinctive 1952 Modern Ranch house shaped around amazing mountain views and set within lush gardens.

When Jill Harmon and Frank Fairman began searching for a Palm Springs home, they wanted something different from the historic houses they had previously owned: a midcentury residence with architectural integrity, a strong sense of place and genuine historic character. They found it in the Lawrence Welk Residence, a distinctive 1952 Modern Ranch house shaped around amazing mountain views and set within lush gardens.

Designed and constructed by master builder Joseph S. Pawling, the house interprets the Western ranch tradition popularized by architect Cliff May. Pawling customized the style with distinctive Desert Modern details that capture the ease and informality of postwar Palm Springs living.

Its boomerang-shaped plan was oriented to frame the San Jacinto Mountain views from nearly every room. The pool, spa and lounging terrace were deliberately placed at the front of the property, highlighting the mountains as a dramatic backdrop, while a sculptural cactus garden and fire pit provide a counterpoint to the lush landscape.

Inside, Pawling transformed the informality of ranch-house living into a distinctly Modern composition. The sloping, tongue-and-groove Douglas Fir ceiling follows the roofline, bringing height and volume to the living and dining areas, while exposed beams emphasize the home’s structure. A large stone fireplace wall provides the interior’s defining architectural feature, separating the living area from the entry and kitchen while preserving the openness of the plan. In the kitchen, the original St. Charles steel cabinetry offers visitors a rare opportunity to see an important element of midcentury design still in place.

Named for legendary bandleader and television host Lawrence Welk, the residence will open its doors for the first time since a recent renovation refreshed the interiors with a light, Modern flair while honoring its architectural character and storied past.
