Explore the creative exchange between California and Japan in shaping California Modernism. Hear leading architects, historians & curators, then experience an exclusive in-exhibition tea ceremony.

California Modernism did not develop in isolation. For more than a century, architects, artists, designers, and craftspeople have carried ideas across the Pacific, creating one of the most influential design conversations of the Modern era.

Presented in conjunction with Palm Springs Art Museum’s California Loves Japan, this signature Modernism Week forum brings together internationally recognized architects, scholars, and curators to explore the enduring exchange between Japan and California.

Featured speakers include: Ken Tadashi Oshima, Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle; Monica Obniski, Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the High Museum of Art; Takashi Yanai, Architect and Partner at Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects; and Christine Vendredi, JoAnn McGrath Executive Director and Chief Curator at Palm Springs Art Museum.

Through engaging presentations and moderated conversations, participants will discover how Japanese approaches to architecture, landscape, and material culture helped shape California Modernism, and how California, in turn, influenced generations of Japanese designers. Moving from broad historical perspectives to intimate case studies, the program explores the work of visionaries including Isamu Noguchi, Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, and Arata Isozaki, revealing connections that continue to influence contemporary architecture and design.

The day culminates in a signature experience available exclusively to forum participants: a traditional Japanese tea ceremony presented within the recreated tea house featured in California Loves Japan. Discover how ritual, architecture, craftsmanship, and hospitality come together in one of Japan's most enduring design traditions. Once ticketed, guests will receive an email with information for selecting a time slot.

Participation includes the option of either Forum Only tickets or Forum PLUS Tea Ceremony Experience tickets. Museum member pricing is available.

Every ticket type includes museum admission for the day.
