Curated Landscape: Monuments, Sculpture and Other Built Delights on the Grounds of Sunnylands

Walter and Leonore Annenberg began entertaining at their desert home Sunnylands in 1966. Major artworks and other unique structures were steadily added to the grounds over the next fifteen years. These lively additions augmented some built gems that estate architect A. Quincy Jones tucked into the original landscape. The presentation will include a Jones-designed element that was never built as it was based on a humorous bird-related misunderstanding.

The Sunnylands grounds provided a new curatorial adventure for these worldly ambassadors, travelers, conveners, and serious art collectors. Two structures providing alternative outdoor entertainment zones were installed on the 200-acre grounds and can be directly linked to the Annenbergs’ travels. They are the ultimate travel souvenirs. Two sculptures, also tucked into private corners of the landscape, remain a mystery, yet some surprising clues have been discovered and will be discussed.

Join Anne Rowe, Director of Heritage at Sunnylands, as she takes us on a deep dive into the intriguing provenance behind each sculpture and the unique “follies” the Annenbergs’ chose for their landscape. Learn about the spectacular range of outdoor delights dotted throughout the estate, thoughtfully sited to elicit happy incidences.
