Stories Untold: Preserving Sites of African American Resilience, Activism, Achievement and Architecture

Too often the places where significant African American history happened have been unrecognized and under-celebrated for the important role they play in the fabric of American society. The stories these places represent need to be told. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is working to fill this gap through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.

This preservation program is the most extensive campaign in U.S. history dedicated to preserving our nation’s diverse history. They invite you to stand with them by joining two leaders from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund for this Untold Stories lecture.

Brent Leggs, executive director, and Brandon Bibby, senior preservation architect, will take attendees on a journey to the work of preserving the past with hope for the present. As part of this journey, they will share how Black architects and designers helped shape the modern architecture movement in the United States by innovating, experimenting, and pushing the limits of how people interact with the built environment.

This is why the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and the Getty Foundation’s Keeping It Modern Initiative launched Conserving Black Modernism, a three-year grant program to preserve Modernist architecture by Black architects and designers. Join them for this discussion and help shape the definition for “Black Modernism.”
